Quentin and Storyboard

Quentin is Claudia's imaginary boyfriend, however, I have decided to do use the same model for both which means Claudia is her own boyfriend.  Therefore she beats herself up instead of another 'person'.

Quentin loves Claudia but not as much as Claudia loves Quentin.  This is why she gets angry and beats him.  I have decided to give him red under his eyes for getting upset so much at the fact he gets beaten up all the time, even though technically Claudia is beating herself.

I have also decided to use some latex and supracolour to create rope burns on Quentin's neck.  This would be from Claudia trying to strangle and kill him, but really, she would be trying to hang herself because she is so lonely.  Here is my story/mood board for Quentin - http://www.pinterest.com/laurenamyjeffer/quentin/

Estella Evaluation

Estella Evaluation

I was really pleased with my Estella final look because I had chosen to work on a model whom had a fringe.  I had also only practised my hairstyle once before the timed assessment and I felt it went really well so this was a bonus.

If I was to change anything to redo this look it would be to apply the make-up slightly heavier.  As the image was shot in black and white the make-up was very hard to pick up.  I would make the contouring and the blusher heavier so you can really see the strong features.  Although I would want certain products to be heavier, I would also need to blend them into the foundation so it looks like a beautiful make-up rather than products just layered on top of each other.

I loved the hairstyle I had chosen to do as it had quite a few steps to follow which meant this was challenging for me.  I needed to manage my time well so I didn’t run over my time limit.  I did this by splitting up my time into sections and allocation steps to those time frames.

I would definitely do this look again on the same model because I thought she was perfect for the look I was trying to achieve.  She is beautiful but has a young face just like Estella and creating this look on her was great for my timed assessment.

Miss Havisham Evaulation

Miss Havisham Evaluation

Overall I was very happy with my Miss Havisham final looks.  Although it was challenging, I really enjoyed tackling continuity.  It was the first time I had ever had to do a continuity look and I felt I did a good job at recreating my Miss Havisham look.

If I was to recreate this look again, I would maybe change my design slightly.  I think I could’ve done a more challenging look.  I could’ve added some more special effects such as cuts or bruises, however, I decided to go with less is more.  I do feel my design was effective and my model posed well for the photographs.  I went for a sad, lonely look and she pulled faces to suit these emotions.

Although my model was great, I would choose a different for next time because she had bright red hair.  She offered to dye it for me however, I thought it wouldn’t be fair to let her do that.  So to overcome this problem, I bought some grey coloured hairspray online.  This worked really well for my final look, but some red did show through on the pictures, which I tried to get the same on my second continuity image.

I was really pleased with the way I had blended all of my products into the skin.  There were no harsh lines and I made sure I covered my models neck and ears so the colour difference did not show up on camera.

Estella

Equipment

·         Foundation

·         Concealer

·         Eyeshadow palette

·         Tremble bronzer

·         Blusher

·         Lipstick palette

·         Powder

·         Brushes

Method

1.       Once you have cleansed, toned and moisturised, apply the correct colour of foundation all over the skin, making sure you blend it in well.

2.       Next, using a small brush, apply concealer to the blemishes on your models skin and blend it in to the foundation.

3.       Using the white eyeshadow from the eyeshadow palette, apply this all over the lid evenly.  Then take the lighter brown and gently fade it out towards the outer corner.  To finish off the eye, use the darker brown in the crease and in the outer corner.

4.       Also using the light brown and a sharp angled brush, shade in your models eyebrows to even them up.

5.       Use an angled brush to apply the bronzer under the cheek bones to give her face some structure and shape.

6.       With a big blusher brush, apply some blusher to the apples of the cheeks, apply it quite heavily as the picture will be photographed in black and white.

7.       Use some translucent powder to set the make-up.

8.       Now onto the lipstick.  Use a lipstick brush and a light pink/peachy colour from the lipstick palette.  Be sure to apply the lipstick properly, making sure you follow the lip line so the lips are even.

Products used –
·         Large curling iron
·         Small curling iron
·         Hair brush
·         Bobby pins
·         Bun pins
·         Hairspray
Firstly, brush your models hair thoroughly so all of the knots are out.
Next, use the criss cross method of bobby pins around your models head, just above her ears.  However, you must leave two small side sections out to curl later.
Use a large curling tong to curls the hair that is underneath the criss cross bobby pins.  Once you have curled each section, pin them up in rolls with bobby pins.
Once you have pinned the whole head, use bun pins to join the rolls together.  This will make the hairstyle look like one long roll.
Next, use some small curling irons to curl the small side sections and set with hairspray.

Blotchy skin and tears

Sweat/fever

Equipment

·         Supracolour palette

·         Gylcerine

Method

1.       Use your finger and some red from the supracolour palette and dab it where a person would become flushed during a fever.  I chose to put it on the forehead, cheeks and nose.  Be sure to apply it evenly and make sure it’s not too heavy and fake.

2.       Again, using your finger, apply some glycerine where a human would get sweaty.  I chose the forehead and bridge of the nose.

Tears

Equipment

·         Glycerine/tear stick

Method

1.       Use a cotton bud to apply the glycerine into the corner of the eye and let it drip down their face.  You could also apply some under the middle of the eye and let that tear drip down too.

2.       You could also use a tear stick which is a bit like vicks vapour rub.  Rubbing this underneath the eye can help the model produce tears and can make the eye look bloodshot.

Claudia and Storyboard

Although Claudia is in her twenties, I wanted her to look a lot younger than she is, I used a young model with blonde hair who had soft features. I understand that villains normally have brown hair, however I wanted to contrast this so that blonde people can be just as bad.

Yes she has soft features but I decided that was all part of the innocent look. On the outside she looks hurt and aching, but deep down she is a conniving femme fatale.  I also didn't want to have her just posing, I wanted to incorporate some sort of prop.  So, I decided to write a sign that said 'LOVE' and have my model holding it up at the camera.  I also chose to have big eyebrows as this is a sign of power.

Claudia loves Quentin so much and she feels like she doesn't get the same back, this is why I have decided to include some injuries to my Quentin character.  Here is a link to my pinterest for my mood/story board - http://www.pinterest.com/laurenamyjeffer/claudia/

Quentin final hair ideas

Final Hair ideas for Quentin

Equipment

  • Hairdryer
  • Mousse
  • Hair band
  • Comb
  • Round hair brush
  • Section clips
Method
1.      Comb all of the knots out of your models hair and make sure it is smooth and silky.

2.      Make small, neat sections all over the head and use the section clips to keep the hair up and out of the way.

3.      Start at the back of the head, use the hairdryer with a nozzle and a rounded brush to blow the hair downwards.  This will help the stray hairs naturally flow down the hair shaft and gives a soft smooth finish.
4.      When you get round to the front, top sections smooth a small amount of mousse onto the hair.  Use the comb to come it through and the hairdryer to make sure all of the fly – aways are smoothed down.

5.  Next, with the comb, scrap all of the hair back into a neat ponytail and make sure all fly aways are secured with some mousse.  Then tie up the ponytail with a hair band  and make sure it cannot be seen at the top of the head.

·         Disposable wands
Method
1.      After cleansing, toning and moisturising your models face, mix together the lightest foundation from the palette and the white foundation until you have and even colour.

2.      Then using a flat brush, apply this all over the face.  Next, using a blending brush, blend the foundation all over the face and down the neck and ears.
3.      Next, using your finger, dab some red from the supracolour palette under the eyes, making sure it is even on both sides.
4.      Then using a disposable wand, streak some grey supracolour through your model’s eyebrows.
5.      Set the grease make-up with some translucent powder and a big powder brush.
6.      Using a lip brush, choose a pale lip colour from the lip palette and neatly apply it all over the lips.   However do not go too heavy as we are creating a masculine make-up.

7.      After doing a latex test, apply some latex to the neck of your model using a cotton bud.  Apply around 4/5 layers once each layer is dry.  Then, using your finger, slowly rub at the latex until it comes away.
8.      Lastly, apply some red and burgundy supracolour onto the latex to help it look more like a burn.

Claudia and Quentin

I did a lot of thinking about Claudia and Quentin as I wanted to do something different and unique. As Quentin is Claudia's imaginary boyfriend I decided to use the same model for both characters.

This meant Claudia is technically her own boyfriend.  When thinking of this idea I really hoped no one else would think of anything similar and I don't think they have.  I didn't just want to use two models as this would be too obvious, I wanted to think outside of the box.

Each character has their own subheading on two other blog posts with character profiles in them.

The song I have chosen for my music video is by Soko - We Might Be Dead Tomorrow. I imagine this as Claudia singing it at 'Quentin' because he doesn't love her as much as she loves him.  The lyrics are beautiful yet creepy and deep and meaningful.

5.      Using the same brush, draw a line down each side of the nose, making sure it looks symmetrical.
6.      Lastly, using a harder brush and the black supracolour, shape the outline of the lips you want to achieve.  My model’s lips were quite small, so I went slightly over her natural lip line.

Creating Miss Havisham continuity

This is my Miss Havisham continuity.  I was very pleased with my recreation of this look as it was very difficult to cover the hair in exactly the same way.  I understand you can still see the red of my model's hair however I tried my best to cover it all.  The side curls also didn't look exactly the same, other than that I was very happy with my hair recreation.

I was most proud of my make-up recreation as this looked very similar.  I tried to use the same amount of products in each area.  It definitely helped working from a face plan and my first image as I could see exactly where I was placing the products.

Creating Miss Havisham

Miss Havisham

Equipment

·         Supracolour palette

·         Foundation palette

·         White foundation

·         Tremble bronzer

·         Red eye pencil

·         Glycerine

·         Powder

·         Eyeshadow palette

·         Disposable wands

·         Brushes

·         Powder puff

Method

1.       Cleanse, tone and moisturise the whole face to get off any old make-up.

2.       Mix together a light foundation and white foundation together and apply to the skin.  Blend in using a blending brush.  Making sure you blend the foundation down into the neck and onto the ears.

3.       Use the light brown and dark burgundy under the eyes with a flat brush and blend into the foundation using your clean finger.  Add a touch of blue to give a tired effect.

4.       Ask your model to look straight ahead, pull down their lower eyelid and apply red pencil along the waterline.

5.       Using a flat brush, apply some white eyeshadow on the eyelids.  Blend some yellow and brown in using the same brush.  This will give some depth to the eyes.

6.       With an angled brush, apply some tremble bronzer underneath the cheek bones.  This will give a sunken in and elderly look.

7.       Next, with a disposable wand use some grey from the supracolour palette and apply it through the eyebrows, making sure you do not apply too much product.

8.       Once you have applied all of the greasepaint products, use a powder puff to apply some translucent powder.

9.       Lastly, just before the you photograph your work, apply some glycerine for one tear running down the face.

Hair

Equipment
  • Wrap for model
  • Hairbrush
  • Section Clips
  • Tail comb
  • Backcombing brush
  • Curling tongs
  • Hair pins
  • Geisha pins
  • Grey hair spray

Method

1. Firstly put a wrap on your model and make sure he/she is comfortable

2. Next, using a hairbrush, brush all of the knots out starting from the ends of the hair

3. With the tail comb create a middle or side parting depending on your look and section off the hair in front of the ears.

4. Split the back section into 3 parts - 2 sides and 1 middle.  Start off with the middle section and use your tail comb to make clean sections ready to tong.  Make sure you over direct the tongs to give extra lift.  You also need to set your curls out in a brickwork pattern.  I also kept 2 extra side parts out to create the curls that hang down.
5. When tonging the hair - roll the hair around the barrel and roll the barrel towards your model.  Gently release the curl making sure you keep it in a barrel shape and pin it to the head.  Repeat this for the whole middle section
6. Next you need to tong both side sections.  You need to tong these sections in the direction you want them to go.  For example - for the left section, roll the hair around the tong towards the model.  Repeat this for both sections of the hair and secure with pins.
7. Now you need to start on the front section of your models head.  I chose to not do a parting as i find this more striking.  However, you still need to tong the hair in the direction you would like it to go and really emphasis the over directing.  You then need to let all of the curls cool.
8. Take out the back middle section and right side section of curls and brush them through.  Back comb slightly to prepare for padding.  Criss cross hair pins down the middle of the section.
9. Bring the hair back over itself and roll around your hand. Use a geisha pin to keep the hair in place.
10. Take the last back section (left) and brush out all the curls. Then add that section on top of the original roll and use one pin to hold it in place.
11. Now onto the top section. Take out all of the curls and brush through. I then added some large padding to create a more Victorian look and wrapped the hair around it.  I used different sized pins to secure this.  It took me a few times to get this the way I wanted.
12. Next, using the end of a comb, pull some strands out to make the hairstyle look old and slept on.
13. Lastly, use the grey hairspray to change the colour of the hair and finish the look.
