Make up influences - Miss havisham

Although I looked at inspiration for my Miss Havisham design, I came up with my own ideas influenced by images and films I had seen.

This is Helena Bonham Carter from the British film adaption of Great Expectations.  I took the elements of her pale skin and grey dusty hair for my designs.  She also has greyed eyebrows which I incorporated into my design.

I also took some inspiration from my own eyes.  I have bad bags under mine and constantly look tired, so I added a touch of red into my face plan to give the effect of lots of crying and rubbing of the eyes.

This is Gillian Anderson as Miss Havisham from the BBC production of Great Expectations.  I took the elements of her pale skin and gauntness for my design.  With all of the descriptions listed above I came up with my final face plan.

Estelle make up influences

With my timed assessment for Estelle, I wanted to create something cute but beautiful because I chose to design a young Estelle.

I took most of my inspiration from the Estelle in the BBC production.  She is sneaky yet somehow warm and I wanted that to shine through in the hair and make-up.  I decided to go with less is more in terms of make-up and went with a natural base with some contouring.  Also, Estelle is a young age here so she wouldn't be wearing heavy make-up anyway.

As the photograph would be in black and white, I had to make sure the make-up was slightly heavier than normal so it would be picked up by the camera.

Izzy Meikle-Small played Estelle and she has very soft features and skin.  This meant any thick make-up would mask this and make her look a lot older than she was.



BEAUTIFUL STRIKING SIMPLE

I have chosen these hairstyles to be simple because they are easy to achieve and also look good.  Many people just quickly put their hair up in a rough ponytail for the pretty, off the face look.  Some of them look sleek and neat which looks cute and simple.  Many celebrities will have their hair in a sleek ponytail if they have an intricate dress because it will draw the publics attention to the outfit.

To me, these hairstyles are striking because they are sleek and smooth.  People with strong facial features will suit this hairstyle best as it will draw attention the to middle of the face.  Just like Kendall Jenner (far left), she has a beautiful face and with her hair  swept off her face, we are drawn to it.

I have chosen light, soft, fluffy hair which you might wear to an important event or party to go with an extravagant outfit.  I also think if you want to achieve a beautiful hairstyle, you have to put quite a bit of time and effort into them.  All of the hairstyles I have chosen are intricate and will involve some patience in creating the hairstyle.

Miss Havisham - Laila

I took this opportunity to practise some ideas for my Miss Havisham look.  I wanted to try out a few ideas to incorporate for my final design.

Firstly I wanted to try out wrinkling skin.  I did this by using some PVA glue on Laila's forehead.  I layered it over making sure I let it dry in between each layer, then gently started rubbing away at it.  Some bit slowly started coming away, however I didn't get the look I was trying to achieve.

I then tried paling her down.  I did this by mixing a flesh coloured foundation with a white foundation and applied it onto the face.  I then took a blending brush and made sure it was blended right into the hairline, down the neck and onto the ears.  This is extremely important for photographs as the skin colour difference will be picked up on camera.

Poem

Beloved sweetheart bastard. Not a day since then 
I haven’t wished him dead. Prayed for it 
so hard I’ve dark green pebbles for eyes, 
ropes on the back of my hands I could strangle with.

I love that fact that the opening line into this poem is an oxymoron. I feel it really opens the poem as you can already start analysing the character.

Spinster - this sums Miss Havisham up in one word as it is practically her title.  She was jilted at the alter by her husband to be.
 

Hair ideas for Miss Havisham

I would like to create a hairstyle for Miss Havisham which has an element of decaying as I feel her persona gives off that vibe.  I did some research on Pinterest of some messy decaying hairstyles and decided to go with something back combed. http://www.pinterest.com/laurenamyjeffer/decaying/

I decided to go for a hairstyle like this because I feel her hair would be messy especially after sleeping and having it styled for so long.  However I still wanted to keep an element of structure and style there to show that once it was a beautiful up do.

As we had been taught the French pleat I thought it was a great way to quickly put the hair up in a neat way.  This meant I had more time to focus on the make up and the rest of the hairstyle.

I combined the idea of a messy quiff at the front with some spiral curls down the sides of the face along with a French pleat that I will 'decay'

I want to create a young version of Estella as my model has quite a young face.  I feel soft curls will compliment my models features and give an innocent look. 

My model has blonde hair and although the photographs are going to be taken in black and white, I feel the tones of her hair will still come through.  She also has a fringe which I felt I could incorporate into my design because some young Victorian girls did have fringes.
